Have you ever had one of those moments where you find yourself cursing your body?
“I’m too fat!” “My allergies are the worst.” “Ugh, why is my stomach upset AGAIN?”
Does this happen daily? Maybe sometimes even hourly?
I’ll tell ya, it did for me.
And it was as discouraging, disappointing, and frustrating as anything in my life has ever been.
Because it eats at you all day, every day.
After all, you live in your body! It affects every aspect of your life - how could it not?
But if your body is working beautifully and effectively. Ahhhhh... (Imagine a heavenly choir singing that.)
It’s AMAZING! A healthy body means happier and more balanced moods, energy throughout the day, no more aches, pains, or digestive discomforts, and hope for the future.
And there are 3 things in particular that I LOVE to focus on to get my body to this harmonious place.
- Whole Foods
- Essential Oils
- Natural Self-Care Routines
I’ve come a long way from where I used to be. Throughout my childhood, high school, and college I was always tired and overweight. I tried countless diets and programs, from HCG (which limits you to like 800 calories a day - what was I thinking?), to weight watchers, to training for a freakin’ triathlon!
But did I see any results from these? Nope. At least nothing notable, and definitely nothing that lasted.
In fact, it wasn’t until after I had my second baby, Stella, that I finally started putting the right pieces together - those elusive little buggers - and making progress.
And it felt so good!
So what did I learn from all of this? The years of struggling, discouragement, frustration, and disappointment?
Well, the answer was two-fold. (Makes it sound fancy, huh?)
- There’s no be-all solution. Every person is unique, and different things will work for them.
- The right whole foods for your body (along with beautiful self-care) can work magic in your life. Look out!
For me, the evil, black-hearted symptoms from which I so needlessly suffered were debilitating allergies, a serious lack of energy, and crummy digestive issues.
Okay, maybe that was a bit dramatic, but I hated them!
But get this, with just a few really simple changes to my diet and lifestyle - and of course I’m going to tell you what they were - I was able to virtually eliminate my allergies, boost my energy (hello 6 AM!), and I lost 30 pounds in 3 months.
Yeah. You read that right.
Before we get into the how of detoxing and healing your body, I want to really quickly go over what happens to our bodies when we don’t eat well. And some of the symptoms that you may be all too familiar with.
What Happens When We Don't Eat Well
When we eat those oh-so-alluring treats, you know, the ones high in saturated fat, refined sugar, and processed artificial ingredients - the good stuff, if you will - our bodies just can’t digest and metabolize our food properly.
Those ingredients flat out interfere with our bodies processes and abilities. They’re bad news. And they just love sneaking those nasty little toxins into our bodies. You may be very familiar with this ugly reality because you suffer from things like:
- Weight gain
- Anxiety and mood changes & imbalance
- belly bloat, irritable bowl syndrome, or constipation
- low energy
- low sex drive
- brain fog
- itchy skin
- sleep issues
Any of those sound familiar?
Truth be told, I could go on! There are even more symptoms that people struggle with every day. Don’t worry, I won’t. I think you get the picture.
But here’s the good news: it can be surprisingly easy to reduce and in many cases even ELIMINATE a good amount of these symptoms with just some simple and detoxifying swaps and add-ins to your diet and lifestyle.
Wham, bam, thank you ma’am. That’s how simple I’m talkin’.
And guess what? You do that, and you’re looking at things like:
- better sleep
- weight loss
- improved digestion (which means less and often no more bloating, constipation, etc.)
- a strengthened immune system
- clearer skin
- more energy
- more confidence
- more balanced moods -
Wait, what was that last one? Bear with me for a minute because I’m about to preach -
More balanced moods. This is HUGE!
I notice an AMAZING difference in my moods when I eat whole, natural foods and have fewer toxins in my body, versus when I’m eating lots of sugar and processed junk.
You know, no more bagfuls of Cadbury Eggs or stashes of Hostess Cupcake wrappers.
When I do have those stashes, my family can look forward to a shorter temper, which means more yelling at my kids (sorry babies), more discouragement, hopelessness, frustration, and blues-y-ness. (Yes, I did just make that word up, but the blues are downright bad!)
I am less interested in spending quality time with my husband.
I just want to be left alone.
BUT, before I bum you out too much, on the other hand, it’s incredible when I DO focus on whole foods and keeping my toxicity down.
I’m way happier and more even tempered. I’m more hopeful and friendly, which means better relationship with my family, more productivity, it’s amazing.
Anyway, I just wanted to rant on that because unfortunately it’s overlooked waaay too often - and it shouldn’t be!
Your mood affects your entire day, and really, your entire life.

3 Ways To Powerfully (and Naturally!) Detoxify Your Body
So let’s get in to the 3 natural ways I use to detoxify my body and recommend to my clients.
No worries, they’re easy to keep up, so you can turn to them whenever. I’m talking total flexibility, baby.
1. Essential Oils
First off, just in case you’re not familiar, I want to really briefly touch on what essential oils are exactly.
Essential oils are naturally occurring compounds that can be found in plants. That means stems, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, bark, etc. You get the picture.
The oils from those plant parts are distilled into the really potent essential oils that you know and l-o-v-e.
The REALLY great thing about them is that they carry the benefits of those plants and can be extremely powerful. In fact, they’ve been used for food, health care, and more for THOUSANDS of years.
Yeah. You’re getting the goods here.
So with that general idea of what essential oils are and where they come from, let’s touch on some of the benefits. Some of the specific things they can be used for.
Essential oils can be really helpful in improving digestion, relaxation, mental clarity, respiratory health, and moods.
To give you a good idea of why I think oils are so unbelievably cool, here are some of my favorite oils that I use every day.
- Every morning I rub a protective blend on the bottom of my girls’ feet.
This helps protect them against germs they might encounter throughout the day and is especially great if they’re going to school. Those ooey, gooey kids they’re surrounded by have much less of an effect.
(Just as a note, You do it on the bottoms of the feet because that is where the largest pores on your body are and so it absorbs the oil the quickest.)
- I put a couple of drops of lemon in my water every morning.
Lemon is great for cleansing and waking up your digestion. Two things we can get on board with, right? Plus, it’s alkalizing.
- I’ll also put a couple drops of grapefruit in my water throughout the day.
This stuff is great at supporting your metabolism, and can even sometimes suppress your appetite by helping you judge a little better when you’re actually hungry. Holla’!
- I LOVE a purifying blend.
I’m talkin’ lemon, lime, firs, and cilantro, amongst other oils.
This puppy has such an uplifting scent and is great for cleaning. I’ll put a couple of drops in my dishwasher before every load and in each load of laundry I do. It gives the clothes that fresh, heavenly scent. You know the one. And, hey, you might not think a cleaning blend is important for detoxing your body, but it is. The fewer toxins you’re using day-to-day in your products, the fewer are entering your body. So this change alone can really help with things like allergies. Truth.
- Finally, sometimes I’ll throw a couple of drops of peppermint on my wrists after meals to help promote healthy detoxification.
Here's how: Drop (the oil), rub (the wrists), sniff (with your nostrils), enjoy (with your...umm...brain, I guess?)
But these are just some of my favorite specific uses, let’s get into 6 of THE best oils for natural balance and detoxification. And I may even tell you what they’re good for.
Lemon is probably the best basic essential oil you can have. It’s so versatile and useful.
I use it all the time. It can be great for household cleaning in the air and on surfaces, and, as you probably recall, it helps cleanse the body.
But there’s more! So much more. Lemon also promotes healthy respiratory function and positive moods, it’s really invigorating if you need a little kick in the middle of the day, it has antioxidant benefits, and it’s a great oil to have if you’re ever sick
Believe it or not, (which you probably do because it’s really not that much of a stretch) peppermint is even better than lemon at promoting clear breathing.
But here’s why I love it: it’s great for nausea.
If I’m ever feeling a little nauseated, I’ll just drop some peppermint in my palms, cup my hands over my face, and breeeathe. The result is almost immediate. Goodbye nausea.
Man, I wish I had known about this when I was pregnant.
You already know one of the reasons this oil kicks butt when it comes to detoxification, (It's good for your metabolism, in case your brain needed a little refresh. I know mine did.) but it’s also good for cleansing, for oily skin issues, and for fatigue and soreness.
Okay, let me level with you here, I don’t really have that much personal experience helichrysum, but I just had to include it.
Why, you ask? Because it can just be so darn helpful with natural detoxing. You know, the thing we’re trying to learn about.
It promotes healthy liver function, which is crucial if you’re looking to get the toxins out of your body, and localized blood flow, as well as overall circulation.
And all of these things? Really, really great for detoxification. Your liver and your blood are two necessary components for detoxifying your body. Trust me, you want ‘em working right.
Oh! And also it’s really great for skin. It’ll give you that pretty glow. After all, you want people to be able to see what that detoxification is doing for you, right?
Fennel is GREAT for digestion. You know how sometimes Indian restaurants will have a little bowl of herbs for you to grab and chew on after your meal? Well, fennel just happens to be in that mix. Because it’ll help you digest better!
And sometimes this is necessary after Indian food.
PLUS, it can help ease your monthly cycles - hallelujah! And it’s calming on the skin and supports a healthy lymphatic system.
Lastly we have oregano, which is near and dear to my heart.
Like most of the other oils I’ve mentioned, it’s good for cleansing and digestion, and it has antioxidants. You get it.
But it’s also a great antibacterial and anti fungal. I used oregano every day when my daughter had a plantar wart on the bottom of her skin, and it worked SO much better than the store-bought treatment we tried.
And there you go! Six of the best oils for natural detoxification. Start incorporating them in your daily routine tomorrow - why waste time?
Fortunately, there's an easy way to do that. Why We Detox
Now, before I get into the next section, let’s talk for just a second on why you might want to detox.
Why even do it?
First off, toxins deplete your body.
These suckers rob you of energy, cause you to gain weight, result in aches, pains and poor digestion, and result in allergies and breakouts.
I’m not a fan.
Luckily, as we're learning there are easy and simple ways to start detoxing our bodies every day!
So that I’ve described how you can powerfully use essential oils to combat toxins, let’s talk about whole foods.
Honestly, our food is where it's at. It's where we can have the greatest impact. Really give those toxins a good right hook.
However, we want to be really healthy, safe, and gentle in the way we use food to detoxify our bodies. We want it to be enjoyable and satisfying, and not about deprivation or choking down foods we hate, right? Or is it just me?
So HOW do we detox with whole foods?
My 6 week program, Free Your Body, Love Your Life answers this question in exquisite detail, with a comprehensive system for cleansing, detoxifying, and transforming your body in ALL areas of your life.
But for now, here are a few basic, but powerful, guidelines:
- The very best thing you can do to detoxify with whole foods, is focus on a plant-based diet. Even better? Choose foods that are in season.
But don’t freak out!
This isn’t to say you can only eat plants or only eat in season. Just start the process of adding in more and more fresh, whole foods.
You do this and your body will naturally begin to detoxify more easily and often.
- As for foods to avoid, this may be painful to hear, so brace yourself, but if you’re looking to detoxify you really ought to stay away from:
- processed foods.
Now before you react, because I know that sounds like a lot, I just want to emphasize again that the more you do, the more you’ll see.
What I’m saying is it’s not necessarily necessary to eliminate ALL of these foods overnight, but if you can look for opportunities to swap any of these foods or crowd them out with better choices on a day-to-day basis, you’re gonna be in good shape.
The more you focus on the good, you’ll notice that the bad will naturally begin to show up less and less. Just sayin’.
The reason these foods in particular are good to avoid (or start to crowd out) is simply because they’re harder on your body than whole, plant-based foods.
Meat is more difficult to digest, alcohol is taxing on your liver (which you know is a vital organ for detoxification), and sugar… well, sugar is just plain toxic.
Trust me, I know it can be one of the most difficult foods to avoid. I feel your pain, sister. But sugar can also have the greatest benefit for avoidance, meaning you’ll see some of the biggest bang for your buck.
Along similar lines with sugar is processed foods. They can just be extremely toxic with all the artificial and chemical ingredients they introduce into our bodies.
As far as eggs and dairy go, many, many people have sensitivities to these foods, (including me) so a lot of the time they put more pressure on your digestive system.
For me, dairy made THE biggest difference. Eliminating it helped my allergies, my weight, and my energy.
All I’m saying is it’s good to experiment, especially if you’ve never gone off of dairy, and see how your body responds. Lastly, soy is kind of along similar lines.
It tends to produce a lot of sensitivities and reactions that you probably wouldn’t even realize were coming as a result of it, so it’s just better to avoid it if you’re looking to detoxify. Again, simply see how your body fares without it. You might notice some big improvements. Wouldn’t that be nice?
3. The last guideline is simply to hydrate.
Hydration is SO unbelievably important with detoxification because it helps with our blood flow, and our blood, our good ol’ blood, is what will carry those nutrients into your body and those toxins out of it.
Now, for the practical side of things, here are some of my favorite whole foods to use for natural detoxification. Ones that I use almost every day:
- Lemon water - you can go the old fashioned way, with an actual lemon, or with a couple drops of lemon essential oil.
BONUS: Add some Apple Cider Vinegar to your lemon water for a boost. Talk about some amazing enzymes.
- I also do a ginger shot daily.
Check this out: for me, a ginger shot is just as good as taking an allergy pill. True story. I just throw one apple and a 1 inch piece of raw ginger into my juicer and drink. Great for digestion, and a great antihistamine.
- Green smoothies.
Another basic, I know. In fact, it can be as basic as a handful of kale, a banana, and some ice, but leafy greens are alkalizing, and fantastic for your blood.
- A good chia pudding.
It just takes a couple of yummy spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg, a non-dairy milk, and some chia seeds. Boom!
Mix the ingredients together and let them sit in the fridge, and you’ve got yourself a healthy and detoxifying treat.
BONUS: Add some yummy fruits on top. This baby’s got loads of fiber and antioxidants. AND, because chia seeds are a really energizing foods, they can help you avoid some of the negative side effects you might typically feel while detoxing, like headaches or fatigue.
- Avocado snack.
I am OBSESSED with avocados. Plus they’re full of really good fats. And yes, that’s a good thing. Those fats are vital to keeping your body healthy and to detoxifying. I’ll just squeeze a little fresh lemon juice onto an avocado and add a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Yum.
BONUS: If the thought of plain avocado doesn’t make you jump for joy, instead you could add it to one of your green smoothies.
The last thing I’m going to mention here is quinoa. This grain is gluten-free and it has lots of fiber and protein, so I’ll just use it to bulk up a meal sometimes so help me feel fuller.
Here’s the thing: you should never feel bad about adding quinoa, (unless you know it isn’t good for your unique body).
Also, get really comfortable getting creative with recipes. Because here’s the other thing (and I think you’ll like this one): if you’re eating the right foods, you can’t really have too much.
Your body won’t let you, number one, you’re not going to binge on broccoli. This means with a detoxification using whole foods, you’ll learn to recognize much easier when you’re satisfied. And number two, you’ll be eating way fewer calories and way more nutrients, so honestly, eat! Eat until you’re satisfied. Not busting…your weak, helpless button barely holding your jeans together…but satisfied.
If you’re focusing on whole, plant-based foods, you’ll almost certainly still lose weight.
And, if your really want to go for some serious results, jump right into the 14 Day Glow Show Detox, where I'll guide you step-by-step, with suggested meals, audios, handouts and more.
So the last piece to a good natural detox is self-care routines. Self- care is so, so, so, so, soooo helpful in enhancing your detox.
And I’ll tell you why.
Certain routines can enhance lymphatic drainage, they can promote liver detoxification, and they can bring toxins to the surface.
But maybe the most important reason, is self-care brings self-love and relaxation.
When your body is taken out of the stressful state that so many people constantly live in, (you may know it as “fight or flight mode,” and it’s possible that with the stresses of your daily responsibilities you are in a constant fight or flight mode) you can move into a “rest and digest” zone.
And this is where the magic happens.
Also, self-care routines can improve your relationship with your body.
AND, and listen up because this is very important, the more love and positivity you have circulating in your mind and body, the better results you’ll see.
Here are a couple of ideas for self-care routines that will enhance your natural detox:
- Epsom salt baths - the ingredients in these baths help bring your toxins to the surface, as does
- Dry brushing, just take a washcloth or loofah and gently brush your skin in long strokes on your limbs and torso
- You can also meditate, which helps move you into that “rest and digest” zone
- Lastly I would suggest massage, which can really help improve your blood circulation and again, just bring those toxins to the surface
when you combine all of these practices - essential oils, whole foods, self-care - you’re looking at a really powerful and effective detox, and all naturally!
Safe and healthy, babe.
So to sum up, when you’re not properly nourishing and detoxifying your body you’ll likely be dealing with mood swings, brain fog, allergies, digestive issues, fatigue, and much, much more.
But your brain and your body deserve the best! They deserve to be fueled, energized, and happy, not inflamed and struggling. Come on, make your brain and body happy!
Luckily, there are easy solutions. A lot of which I’ve touched on, so use this post wisely, but it’s also good to keep in mind that small changes are what matter.
Small changes for long-term results.
Giving your body the right fuel in the food you eat and in your habits and routines helps your body maintain balance.
I’m talking stand-on-your-head, no-hands kind of balance.
Basically food (along with essential oils and self-care, but food especially) has the powerful ability to change every aspect of your life - both in your body and in your mind.
It’s your time, gorgeous! It’s your time to feel good, to feel free, to feel healthy and glowing, and beautiful.
